Small-Space Thinking for Your Existing Home
Designing tiny homes teaches you to make every square foot earn its keep. Cowboy Tiny Homes brings that same discipline to home remodel design. Whether your kitchen feels cramped, your bathroom layout fights you every morning or your living area never quite works, the solution is usually a better plan — not a bigger house.
Our role is to convert your ideas and overall goals into detailed blueprints. We look at how you use the space today, what frustrates you, and what you want it to do tomorrow. Then we draw a design that a contractor can price accurately and build with confidence.
Rooms We Design
Kitchens
Work triangles that fit, islands with room to pass, pantry walls, better lighting and smarter appliance placement.
Bathrooms
Curbless showers, double vanities in tight footprints, aging-in-place features and storage that hides the clutter.
Living areas
Opening walls, reorganizing flow, adding built-ins and connecting indoor rooms to a covered patio.
Bedrooms
Primary suite reworks, closet systems, converting spare rooms to offices and adding en-suite baths.
Have something else in mind, like a garage conversion or attic bonus room? Tell us — converting existing space is often cheaper than building new. If you want a separate living unit instead, see our ADU builders page.
What a Remodel Design Includes
- Existing-conditions review of the space, including measurements and notes on walls, plumbing and electrical.
- Layout options that compare different approaches before you commit.
- Detailed floor plans with dimensions, fixtures, cabinetry and appliance locations.
- Electrical and lighting layout showing outlets, switches and fixtures.
- Interior renderings and 3D views so you can see finishes and colors before you buy them.
- Drawings for pricing and permits where your city requires them.
Why Design Before You Remodel?
Many remodels go over budget for one reason: decisions get made in the middle of construction. When a contractor opens a wall and asks where the outlet goes, every answer costs time and money. A complete remodel design moves those decisions to the beginning, which helps you:
- Get more accurate, comparable bids from contractors.
- Avoid change orders that eat your budget.
- See the finished space before demolition starts.
- Make sure the project meets code and permit requirements.
Remodel Ideas That Borrow From Tiny Homes
Storage you do not see
Toe-kick drawers, appliance garages, pull-out pantries and full-height cabinetry hide everyday clutter and make rooms feel bigger.
Light and sightlines
Removing a non-structural wall, adding a larger window or extending a ceiling line can make a room feel twice its size without adding square footage.
Rooms that do two jobs
A guest room with a Murphy bed and desk, a laundry that doubles as a mudroom, a dining nook with bench storage — the same tricks we use in tiny homes work in full-size houses.
Design for Texas living
Connect the kitchen or living area to a shaded patio, plan efficient cooling and choose durable finishes that handle heat and humidity.
Remodel Design Steps
- Consultation. We talk through the room you want to change, what is not working, your style and your budget.
- Measure and document. Existing conditions are recorded so the design starts from accurate dimensions.
- Layout options. You compare a few approaches — from keeping plumbing in place to a full reconfiguration — with the cost trade-offs explained.
- Refine and render. The chosen layout is detailed with cabinetry, fixtures, lighting and finishes, then rendered so you can see it.
- Final drawings. A complete plan set for contractor pricing and, where needed, permits.
Common Remodel Mistakes a Good Design Avoids
- Islands that block the room. An island needs clear walkways around it; too big and the kitchen gets harder to use.
- Too few outlets and too little lighting. Task lighting and outlets in the right places are cheap during construction and expensive afterward.
- Doors that collide. Swinging doors on cabinets, appliances, showers and rooms need to be planned together.
- Ignoring ventilation. Bathrooms and kitchens need properly sized exhaust, especially in humid Texas climates.
- Moving plumbing without a reason. Relocating sinks and toilets is costly; sometimes a smarter layout gets the same result without it.
Planning Your Remodel Budget
Remodel costs depend heavily on scope: moving plumbing or structural walls costs much more than updating finishes in place. A design gives you a clear scope to price. If you plan to finance your remodel, the loan calculator can estimate payments for a home equity loan or HELOC, and our financing guide explains common options.
Remodel or Build an ADU Instead?
Sometimes the room you want is not inside your house at all. If you need a home office, guest quarters or space for an aging parent, a detached casita can cost about the same as a major addition and gives everyone more privacy. If you are weighing the two, we can sketch both options so you can compare cost, disruption and long-term value side by side. Learn more about ADUs and casitas or estimate one with the tiny home cost calculator.
